Warriors’ Sensational Win Fueled by Stephen Curry’s Three-Point Barrage

Steph Curry dusts off 'night night' celly after preseason game-winner

On Wednesday night, the Golden State Warriors completed a miraculous comeback to overcome the Sacramento Kings 116-115 in a preseason game. The regular season standings were meaningless, but Steph Curry still managed to dominate the game.

The Warriors relied more heavily on their first-string players than they have in prior preseason games due to the absence of Kevon Looney and Draymond Green. Coach Steve Kerr’s decision to move Chris Paul to the bench after acquiring him in the offseason is a harbinger of things to come. All but Andrew Wiggins saw action for about 30 minutes, while Paul, Curry, and Klay Thompson each logged about 35.

While Golden State’s shaky defense had been the theme of their earlier preseason games, the Warriors’ offensive struggles on Wednesday were the result of reckless mistakes. While Thompson shot a dismal 2 for 11, every other member of Golden State’s rotation was extremely effective from beyond the arc. However, they gave the ball away 22 times.

Trayce Jackson-Davis, a second-round selection who started in place of Looney, did a good job of limiting Kings All-Star center Domantas Sabonis to 12 points and 10 rebounds on 4-for-10 shooting. Jackson-Davis finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds, but he also had five fouls.

For the most part of the game, Golden State trailed Sacramento, and the only time they were ahead was in the first quarter. De’Aaron Fox and Keegan Murray led the Kings with 49 points, 15 boards, 5 assists, and 4 steals between them. The Kings’ lead ballooned to 18 points by the last minute of the third quarter, and it looked like they were going to cruise to victory.

But Paul and Curry would not let the Warriors off so easy. With 3.5 minutes remained in regulation, the Kings held an 11-point lead. In the last two minutes, Curry was unstoppable and Paul launched a 7-2 run to get the Dubs within single digits. All 13 of the Warriors’ points came from Steph in the final two minutes, and they were enough to complete the comeback.

Curry hit a crazy bank three with 45 seconds left in regulation to trim the Sacramento lead to 115-114. Warriors center Dario Saric was fouled with an opportunity to equal or take the lead from the free throw line after his team had kept the Kings scoreless for the previous two minutes. Both times he tried, he failed.

The Warriors turned the shot clock off and sent Kings player Kevin Huerter to the line after he committed a foul. With 11 seconds left, Sacramento was up 115-113 after he sank the first of two free throws but missed the second. To take a timeout, Curry grabbed the offensive board. After the break, the Warriors inbounded the ball to Curry, who promptly buried a 30-foot step-back three in Fox’s ear to put the Warriors up 116-115 with five seconds left. Fox blinked and missed the question as time ran out. Ten of Curry’s 18 field goal attempts were successful, and he finished with 30 points on the night.
