To further their engagement in the Oakland Unified School District, the Currys’ Eat.Learn.Play. Foundation and their partners have pledged an additional $50 million. Lockwood’s new outdoor space will have two distinct play structures for younger and older kids, two brand new basketball courts, two brand new mini soccer fields, and a nature discovery area with logs and stumps for climbing and leaping.
Ermias, who asks several questions to various instructors and administrator Nehseem Ratchford on a regular basis, describes his school as a place he “loves” because he can “play with my friends every day here.””
The entire Ermias family stands to gain from this. Lockwood Elementary School, which he attends with his younger brother, has 658 students enrolled as of late last week, with around 65% of them being Hispanic, 25% being Black, and a rising Arabic community as well. The Currys’ ultimate objective is for their kids to become ambitious adults like themselves.
