Andre Iguodala, a four-time NBA champion with the Golden State Warriors and the Most Valuable Player of the 2015 NBA Finals, has reportedly retired from the league. Following his retirement at the end of the 2017-18 season, longtime Miami Heat center Udonis Haslem joined him, making Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James the oldest active NBA player at age 34.
James, who is about to begin his 21st NBA season and will turn 39 years old in a matter of months, is still one of the league’s best players. LeBron James had another All-NBA season in 2017–18, averaging 28.9 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 6.9 assists per game.
LeBron James just found out that he is the oldest player in the NBA. He responded with hilarity before displaying an impressive level of fitness that belies his nearly 40 years:
Fans of the Los Angeles Lakers hope that LeBron will continue to wow with moves like that this season. The foot injury he suffered during the playoffs significantly limited his ability to perform, but before that, the Lakers’ great had numerous moments like that incredible dunk.
But he and the rest of the Lakers have their sights set squarely on the prize: winning the 18th NBA Championship for the club. Nonetheless, LeBron has a shot at a lot of individual awards this season as well.
LeBron needs only 1,348 points to become the first player in NBA history to score 40,000 points. James also has a shot at breaking another record set by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, a former Laker great.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, like LeBron James, will be 39 this year, yet in 1985–1986 he averaged 23.4 points per game as the NBA’s oldest active player.
LeBron James has already had a historic career, and this year might add even more records to the books.
