As the point guard for the Golden State Warriors, Stephen Curry faced his match on Thursday. The wax figure of the basketball legend, clad in his iconic number 30 jersey, was revealed at the Marriott City Center in Oakland, California by Madame Tussauds San Francisco.
The NBA champion and his wife, Ayesha, felt a twinge of nostalgia upon seeing the statue. One of the couples first dates in Los Angeles included a trip to the Hollywood Museum.
“That was one of our first experiences together, walking through and taking pictures with the wax figures at the museum, and now to have one of my own is pretty special,” Curry said reporters in a news statement.
The 2014–15 NBA Most Valuable Player is immortalized in wax, with the ball frozen in the palm of Curry’s left hand. Artists and sculptors spent over four months on the project, painstakingly replicating the 28-year-old athlete by capturing hundreds of measurements.
The group focused on the basketball player’s four tattoos, including the letter “A” on his ring finger, the first letter of his wife’s name, to capture his likeness. The completed statue, which cost about $350,000, will be on display at Madame Tussauds San Francisco indefinitely.
“We are thrilled to add Bay Area NBA phenomenon Stephen Curry to our attraction,” said Chris Connors, General Manager of Madame Tussauds San Francisco. I have no doubt that sports enthusiasts from all around the country would go to see his wax figure.
At the Fisherman’s Wharf spot, Curry will join the likes of Zendaya, a performer, and Laverne Cox, an actress.
