Draymond Green, a power forward for the Golden State Warriors, will be out with a sore left ankle for the team’s season opener on Tuesday against the Phoenix Suns.
Green took part in Monday’s practice and a controlled scrimmage, but according to coach Steve Kerr, the 12-year player still isn’t ready to play in a game.
“He’s doing really well but we don’t feel like it would be wise to throw him out with so little scrimmage time on the floor,” Kerr said the media. “We’ll reassess as the days go.”
Green hurt his ankle in late September while playing pickup basketball at the Warriors’ arena in San Francisco. He was out for the entire preseason.
Green participated in 3-on-3 drills at practice earlier this week after his return. A scrimmage was held with him in attendance on Sunday.
On Friday, the Golden State Warriors will travel to take on the Sacramento Kings.
According to Kerr, the Suns’ absence of Green will be felt.
“I have a clear vision of our team this year and it will not be on display tomorrow night because we are not where we need to be,” stated Kerr. “We’re going to be way better in a month or two, but that doesn’t mean we can’t get off to a good start … play well over the next couple of weeks as we’re fitting Draymond back in.”
In the offseason, Green inked a $100 million contract with the Warriors for four years.
The 33-year-old played in 73 games last year, averaging 8.5 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 6.8 assists. His 52.7 percent field goal percentage was a personal best.
After being selected by the Warriors in the second round (35th overall) of the 2012 NBA draft out of Michigan State, Green has played in 758 games (608 starts) and averaged 8.7 points, 7.0 rebounds, 5.6 assists, 1.4 steals, and 1.0 block in his career.
