The Phoenix Suns defeated the Golden State Warriors, 108-104, in San Francisco on the opening night of the NBA season on Tuesday thanks to a game-high 32 points from Devin Booker, who also contributed three assists in the final minutes.
Up until Booker found Josh Okogie in the left corner for a 3-pointer, the Suns and the Thunder were locked in a tight one-point contest with 1:09 remaining.
After Stephen Curry made two free throws to cut it to three, Devin Booker drew a double team and found Eric Gordon open for another 3-pointer that extended the lead to five with 44.7 ticks remaining.
The Warriors, who dropped three of four to the Suns last year, got as close as 106-104 with 31.4 seconds left on a 3-pointer by Curry following an offensive rebound.
In the end, though, with 10.3 seconds left on the clock, Booker got the ball back and sank a pass to Jusuf Nurkic for a layup that proved to be the game-winner.
Booker, who was playing without new backcourt sidekick Bradley Beal because of the latter’s back issue, dished up six, seven, and eight assists, respectively.
Nurkic recorded a double-double with 14 points and a game-high 14 rebounds, and Kevin Durant added 18 points and 10 rebounds for Phoenix.
Gordon scored 10 points in the second half after missing his first seven 3-point attempts, and Okogie scored 17 points thanks to his late 3-pointer, his only attempt from outside the arc.
The Suns’ 33 points on just 10 fewer shots from outside the arc than the Warriors’ 43 points helped them win the game.
Six Warriors scored in double digits, led by Curry’s 27 points. However, 10 of his 14 3-point attempts were unsuccessful.
Klay Thompson scored 15 points, Chris Paul contributed 14 points and a game-high nine assists, while Draymond Green’s absence (ankle) allowed Jonathan Kuminga to chip in 12 points off the bench for the Warriors.
Powered by Booker’s 21 points before halftime, Phoenix opened a 15-point advantage. However, the Warriors came back strong in the third quarter, going on a massive 21-2 run that gave them a 73-66 lead with 5 minutes left in the third.
