In the first game, PJ Washington scores 25 and youngster Brandon Miller ignites the Hornets, who defeat the Hawks 115-110

NC (Charlotte) —  In the first game of the teams’ season on Wednesday, P.J. Washington scored 25 points, youngster Brandon Miller ignited the crowd with eight of his 13 points in the fourth quarter, and the Charlotte Hornets held on to upset the Atlanta Hawks 116-110.

LaMelo Ball rebounded from a difficult first half to finish with 15 points and 10 assists, while Terry Rozier scored 24 points for the Hornets. For Charlotte, Mark Williams added 13 points and 15 rebounds.

Despite just making 1 of 9 shots from three-point range, Trae Young led the Hawks with 23 points. Jalen Johnson scored 21 points, a career high.

The Hornets’ first player off the bench was Miller, the No. 2 overall pick in the draft, who thrilled the home fans by making his first try at a three-pointer from the left wing. However, the Alabama product was forced to sit out the majority of the first half after picking up his third foul halfway through the second quarter.

In the fourth quarter, Miller came back and really got going. He converted a step-back 3-pointer from the corner and then drained another one from the top of the key to give the Hornets a 101-99 lead that they would never let up in the final 4:19.

With about a minute remaining, Washington and Rozier hit runners to increase Charlotte’s lead to six points.

With 22 seconds remaining, Rozier countered with a low pull-up jumper from the baseline to make it a two-possession game and help seal the victory. Young had cut the lead to three points with his first three of the game.

Ball struggled through the first half, missing all eight of his field goals. This was Ball’s first regular-season game after fracturing his ankle eight months prior. Nevertheless, he recovered, making four 3-pointers in the second half.
