The Los Angeles Lakers were looking for their first win of the season on Thursday night when they played host to the Phoenix Suns in their home opener.
The Suns were without Devin Booker and Bradley Beal, but it was the first time LeBron James and Kevin Durant played together in a meaningful game. The Lakers beat the Suns 100-95, finally claiming their first victory of the season.
D’Angelo Russell scored twice and Anthony Davis converted a three-point play to help the Lakers jump out to an early 7-0 lead before Josh Okogie finally got the Suns on the board with a three-pointer of their own.
However, the Lakers’ inability to secure defensive rebounds gave the Suns an opportunity to seize the lead for the first time, 17-16, midway through the first quarter.
Despite taking a timeout, the Lakers’ defensive woes persisted as the first quarter ended with Phoenix holding a 30-18 advantage.
With renewed vigor, the Lakers opened the second quarter with a 6-0 run capped by Eric Gordon’s three-point shot.
The Suns struggled without Durant, as expected, and the Lakers took the lead back thanks to a Davis three and a James dunk off a great feed from Gabe Vincent.
However, after Durant returned to the game and LeBron sat, the Suns went on a mini-run and took the lead again. Despite James’ late three, the Lakers trailed Durant’s hot shooting from midrange and the rest of the field by a score of 52-48 at halftime.
Davis and Austin Reaves got going for the Lakers early in the third quarter after relatively quiet first halves, but the Suns responded with some timely 3s.
The Lakers continued to struggle offensively and had no defense to throw at Durant as the quarter wore on. The Lakers entered the fourth quarter down 84-72 after a jump shot by Durant had beaten the buzzer.
The Lakers, opening the fourth quarter without Durant, needed to make another run to get back in the game, and they accomplished so by scoring six unanswered points and forcing the Suns to call a timeout. Before Durant came back and hit a huge three, the run had reached 10-0.
Although the Suns’ shooting was equally as bad, the Lakers’ inability to make shots ultimately proved fatal. The score was tied at 87 after four minutes when Davis converted a three-point play in the paint.
James then went on a scoring spree of his own, scoring four consecutive points to put the Lakers back in the lead. However, Durant answered with four straight of his own, and the advantage didn’t last long.
James scored two layups in the closing seconds to put the Lakers up 95-91. Since the Suns were having trouble scoring, that was all that was needed to seal the deal.
