His father, Dell Curry, played basketball professionally for nearly two decades. Dell and Sonya Curry, Steph’s mom, were both students at Virginia Tech, and they eventually tied the knot in 1988. Eventually, the couple had three children: a daughter named Sydel and two sons named Steph and Seth. But in August of 2021, after being married for 33 years, Dell and Sonya made the decision to divorce.
November 2020: “My mom is an educator, so [giving back] was part of her job,” Stephen told PEOPLE about his mom. Staying after school to assist students, visit with parents, and lift morale was a highlight. She sacrificed a lot of time and energy by putting the needs of others ahead of her own.
The Golden State Warriors star has spoken out about his father, saying, “My dad, every chance he got, he was doing stuff in the community…. Every time he showed up, it was a big deal.
Dell and Sonya first met while they were both in college.
Sonya reportedly met her future husband at a Virginia Tech men’s basketball practice while on an official recruiting tour, as reported by the San Francisco Chronicle.
When Dell was drafted into the NBA a few years later, the couple packed up and moved to Utah so that he could play for the Jazz.
During his stint in the NBA (1986-2002), Dell played for the Utah Jazz, Cleveland Cavaliers, Milwaukee Bucks, and Toronto Raptors. While playing with the Charlotte Hornets, he excelled as a point guard.
Dell told Reuters in the year 2020, “I taught my boys the fundamentals of the game and the fundamentals of the shot.” I’m sure that just being around the game and seeing me and some of the best players in the world, my teammates, helped to teach them the ropes, but in the end, they had to build their own work ethic and passion to the game on their own. However, they were responsible for exercising their own restraint and forging forth notwithstanding.
He has received numerous accolades throughout his career, including being named the Hornets’ all-time leading scorer and being inducted into the Virginia Tech Sports Hall of Fame. Since 2009, the proud dad has become a TV analyst for the Charlotte Hornets. He’s also a big fan of his sons’ NBA ambitions.
Sonya and Dell have three wonderful kids. They had their first son, Steph, in 1988, and then another, Seth, in 1990. They welcomed Sydel into the world in 1994.
They are grandparents twice over, since they have six grandchildren. Steph and his wife Ayesha have three children: Riley, Ryan, and Canon, while Seth and his wife Callie Rivers Currys have two children, Carter and Cash. Sydel and Damion Lee, her spouse, had their first child, a son, in 2021.
As far as Steph is concerned, he takes after his mom a lot.

They expressed their gratitude by saying, “We are so thankful for all of our good fortune and achievements!” Since we are both committed to and invested in the success of the next generation, we will inevitably cross paths again. Please pray for our family and respect our desire for privacy during this difficult time.
Sonya has written a post on their parenting style.
A mother of three shares her thoughts on motherhood, the strength she discovered in her faith, and her commitment to her children’s education in her memoir, Fierce Love.
In an interview with PEOPLE, Sonya revealed that she wrote Fierce Love so that “others may find strength and purpose in their own journeys” from her experiences. The publication date for the book is set for May of 2022. That’s why I try to live by the motto: “Never stop praying, never stop learning, never stop loving, and never stop laughing.”
“Growing up, my mom was always the one to challenge us,” Seth remarked. The best of her qualities are shared by all of us, they say.
I can’t wait for the world to hear my mom’s amazing story,” Sydel concluded. My mother has always been there for me and my siblings.
There was a special moment between Steph and Dell after they won the 2022 NBA championship.
In June of 2022, Sonya and Dell saw their son win his fourth NBA title and the 2022 NBA Finals MVP award while leading the Golden State Warriors to a triumph against the Boston Celtics.
Steph, overcome with emotion, wrapped his arms around his father just as the final horn sounded. I had no idea [Dell] was hiding out in the basement, to be quite honest with you,” he stated. When I saw him, I lost it, and I knew I had to act fast. Due to the unique nature of the situation, all I could do was take it all in.
Steph and Seth are the subjects of Dell’s weekly check-ins.
Dell, who is well aware of the time commitments his boys will have in the NBA, makes it a point to check in with them at least once a week.
To PEOPLE he declared in April of 2023, “I watch all their games, whether live or taped, and I try to check in with them every week.”
They engage in light conversation, but basketball is rarely mentioned.
According to Dell, “[We] talk about golf and grandkids more than basketball,” and when Steph or Seth’s teams are struggling, he says “nothing” to them. You can’t get too high or too low in this league, as one player put it: “They’re grown men, and they’ve been in the league long enough to know how it is.”
The fun of being a dad and a fan is understanding what it’s like for your kid to be an NBA player, he continued. If you’re going through a bad patch, it could help to chat about something other than basketball.
