The first three-quarters of Thursday night’s game against the Phoenix Suns were slow for the Los Angeles Lakers. But LeBron James and Anthony Davis led them to win in the fourth quarter, which ended 100-95. But the choice to have Christian Wood guard Suns star Kevin Durant for most of the fourth quarter may have been the most interesting part of the comeback.
Wood has only played two games for the Lakers so far, and he hasn’t been known for being good at defense so far in his career. When the Lakers beat the Thunder on Friday, though, he did well against Durant in the fourth quarter. For some reason, Durant only made 4 out of 11 shots from the field in the fourth quarter, but he still scored nine points. For most of the quarter, Wood was the main defender, and he played the whole quarter.
Davis praised Wood’s play in the fourth quarter and talked about the team’s plan to beat the Suns star in that quarter. Davis also had a few possessions against Durant.
“He took on a hardship. Davis said, “Myself, Bron, and C-Wood do a few different looks, and we just talked to him.” “Try to make things hard for him.” Of course, by throwing different bodies at him. In a lot of ways, it doesn’t matter who is in front of him for him to score. He’s going to take his shot. The only thing we want to do is make it hard and fun. Being rough with him was a great job by C-Wood. Putting him through tough shots. … He came to us and said, “He wants to take the heat at the end, and then we’ll start running our different plans.”
Wood had the best plus-minus score of the game in his 21 minutes of play against the Suns. A big part of that is because he played defense, which isn’t always the case for him. But if Thursday is any sign, Wood may have decided to play a different style of basketball in a different setting.
If he can really play defense, it will change a lot about what the Lakers can do on that end of the court. It’s not impossible that they want to be a top 1-3 defense, as Rui Hachimura thinks they can be.
James isn’t taking Durant’s fights for granted.
Over the course of their likely Hall of Fame careers, James and Durant have fought many times. Thursday night was another classic matchup between the two. The star player for the Lakers doesn’t take those for granted. He says he’s loved playing against and against Durant over the years.
