Lakers Stage Thrilling Comeback, Force Overtime, Yet Succumb to Kings in Hard-Fought Battle

Both the Los Angeles Lakers and the Sacramento Kings entered Sunday night’s game seeking to even their records at 2-1.

It was a tight game that went into overtime, with the Kings emerging victorious by a score of 132-127.

The Lakers started slowly with a 7-3 deficit; L.A.’s first basket came from a 3-pointer by Taurean Prince.

Anthony Davis helped calm down the Lakers with a pair of blocks and eventually scored himself with a putback layup. The Kings jumped off to an early 18-9 lead because the Lakers continued to struggle in transition.

The Lakers were unable to block the Kings from making early 3-pointers despite responding with a 6-0 run following a timeout. With a poster dunk to conclude the quarter, former Laker JaVale McGee had the home fans going and put the Kings up 41-28.

At some point, however, the Kings’ hot shooting from three-point range cooled down, and the Lakers began making small gains. Even though Austin Reaves continued to struggle in the early going of the season despite having several good scoring opportunities, L.A.’s two-way dominance was led by Davis.

At one point, the Lakers were only behind by four points, but after a disastrous finish to the half in which De’Aaron Fox scored five consecutive points, they found themselves losing 66-55 at halftime.

The Kings committed four team fouls in the opening two minutes of the third quarter, putting the Lakers in the bonus for the remainder of the period. The Lakers opened the half on a 6-2 run, prompting a timeout from the Kings. But they came back strong, hitting two triples to increase their lead back to double figures.

So far this season, Prince has been a great addition to the Lakers’ roster. In the third quarter alone, he led a run, found Davis for a slam, and nailed two three-pointers.

The Lakers entered the final period down 87-83 despite having Sabonis and Fox, who had each picked up his or her fourth foul by the end of the third quarter, sitting on the bench.

In the fourth quarter, the Lakers ultimately took the lead thanks to two 3-pointers from Rui Hachimura, who had a poor start to the season. Fox came back and finished a crucial three-point play after they had built a five-point lead.

After Fox rolled his ankle and went to the locker room for a few minutes, James made a triple on the next possession, and Fox responded by making a triple of his own.

The Lakers cooled off at the worst possible time, missing seven consecutive shots and falling behind by six points before LeBron finally broke the drought with a slam.

In the last minute, Davis tied the game with a putback slam, but the game was decided by a pair of free throws by Fox, who had been called for a foolish foul by Gabe Vincent. With 13 seconds remaining, James drove to the basket and scored an easy layup to knot the score. On the ensuing possession, Keegan Murray missed a 3-pointer for the Kings, sending the game into overtime.

After a quiet night, Sacramento’s Malik Monk sparked the Kings with nine points in overtime to put them ahead by four. James scored five points, but Kevin Huerter sank a huge 3-pointer in the last minute to put his side back up by five. That proved to be the winning margin, as the Lakers could not mount a comeback.
