On Sunday night, the Los Angeles Lakers went on the road to play their rivals, the Sacramento Kings. Both teams were trying to get their records to 2-1.
The game went back and forth so many times that it had to go into overtime. In the end, the Kings won 132-127.
The Lakers made a few careless mistakes early on, which led to a 7-3 start. Taurean Prince’s 3-pointer was the first basket for L.A.
Anthony Davis blocked two shots to help the Lakers get settled, and then he scored with a putback layup. But the Lakers have had trouble getting back on track, and that continued early in this game when the Kings took an 18-9 lead.
The Lakers got back on track with a 6-0 run after a timeout, but the Kings were able to get off the ground early and make 3s. Then, during the last few seconds of the quarter, JaVale McGee made a monster dunk that got the home crowd excited. This gave the Kings a 41-28 lead.
Early in the second, Christian Wood got going from long-range with back-to-back threes. It didn’t make much of a difference, though, because the Lakers’ defense kept not doing anything.
The Kings finally calmed down from deep, though, and the Lakers began to chip away. Austin Reaves had a few good chances but couldn’t make them because he was still having a rough start to the season. However, Davis made up for it by continuing to dominate in both areas for L.A.
At one point, the Lakers were only down four points, but De’Aaron Fox scored five straight points to make it a bad end to the half. They went into halftime down 66-55.
The Kings got four team fouls in the first two minutes of the third quarter. The Lakers then had extra time for the rest of the quarter and started the half on a 6-2 run, which made the Kings call a timeout. But they came back strong, hitting a pair of triples to return to a 10-point lead.
So far this season, Prince has been a good addition to the Lakers. In the third quarter, he led a run, setting up Davis for a dunk, and then made back-to-back threes.
The Lakers couldn’t get over the hump and went into the fourth quarter behind 87-83, even though both Sabonis and Fox picked up their fourth fouls and had to sit out the rest of the third quarter.
Rui Hachimura finally got going with two 3-pointers early in the fourth quarter, giving the Lakers their first lead. He had been slow to start the season. They got ahead by five points before Fox came back and made a crucial three-point play for his team.
Fox then rolled his ankle and had to go back to the locker room for a minute. He then came back and made a triple, just like James did on the previous play.
The Lakers lost their cool at the worst possible time. They missed seven straight shots and fell behind by six points before LeBron broke the streak with a dunk.
In the last minute, Davis tied the game with a putback dunk, but Gabe Vincent then fouled Fox in a silly way, and Fox made both of his free throws. After James drove to the basket and made an easy layup, the game was tied again with 13 seconds left. The Kings had one last chance to win, but Keegan Murray missed a three-point shot, sending the game to overtime.
Before OT, Malik Monk had a pretty quiet night. But he came alive with nine quick points that put Sacramento ahead by four. Even though James scored five points, Kevin Huerter made a huge three-pointer in the last minute to put his team back ahead by five. In the end, that was enough to win because the Lakers couldn’t come back.
