MEMPHIS, Tenn. — It didn’t take long for the Dallas Mavericks to play their first regular-season game without one of their superstars. Kyrie Irving missed the 125-110 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies due to a foot strain.

Beginning with good shooting from Grant Williams, the Mavericks established a 17-9 lead over the Grizzlies thanks to a 3-pointer from Luka Doncic. However, they were outscored by a whopping 27-13 for the remainder of the session, with Doncic playing more off-ball and relying on teammates to make plays that didn’t always work out.

Derrick Jones Jr. started the second quarter with 10 consecutive points for the Mavericks, including two 3-pointers. After scoring from deep with 9:03 left in the half, he helped Dallas reclaim a 40-39 lead. Doncic ignited the Mavericks’ late run to end the second quarter, scoring the team’s final 11 points and 15 total points in the final 4:52. At halftime, the Mavericks lead 67-61.

The Mavericks closed the first half shooting 15-26 (57.7 percent) from beyond the arc, with Doncic and Williams accounting for more than half of those attempts with four each. Jones and Jaden Hardy each had multiple makes, and seven players finished with a made 3 in the first half.

The Grizzlies kept it close after halftime, but the Mavericks pulled away late in the third quarter. With 1:45 remaining in the period, Dallas led 93-84 thanks to a string of successful 3s and a foul drawn by Williams in transition that led to two converted free throws after a flagrant penalty. This became a 13-1 run, putting Dallas up 97-86.

Dallas Mavericks v Memphis Grizzlies

It was a recurring trend for the Mavericks to punish the Grizzlies with hot perimeter shooting. A three-pointer from Hardaway at the 10:34 minute of the fourth session gave Dallas its 20th three-pointer, establishing three players scoring 20 or more points. The play gave the Mavericks a 14-point advantage at the time.

The Grizzlies used a torrid streak of perimeter shooting of their own to cut Dallas’ lead to 110-106 with 5:13 remaining in regulation after previously led by as much as 17 points. Doncic’s late-game execution prevented the Grizzlies from mounting a genuine rally.

The Mavericks will play the Chicago Bulls at American Airlines Center on Wednesday.
