The Boston Celtics beat the Washington Wizards 126–107 on Monday night to win their third straight game to start the season. Jaylen Brown scored 36 points and Jayson Tatum added 33.
The Celtics have started the season with three straight wins for the second year in a row.
Brown made 8 out of 13 three-point shots.
“We have a lot of skill. “We will be better than a lot of teams,” Brown said. “All we do is try to make the most of every chance we get.”
Kristaps Porzingis scored 15 points in his first game back in Washington after being there for 2 1/2 years. Porzingis was moved to the Boston Celtics in June. On Wednesday, he scored 30 points in his first game for the team, which is a franchise record.
“I lived here for a year and a half, so I have a lot of good memories here,” Porzingis said.
The Wizards (1-2) were behind the whole game and were down by 26 points after 10 minutes. Kyle Kuzma got 21 points for them.
“Obviously, first quarter, game over,” Wes Unseld Jr., the coach of Washington, said. “That quarter, we played on our heels for the most part.”
Boston jumped out to a 42–19 lead in the first quarter thanks to Brown’s 16 points. At the break, he had 27 points.
Brown said, “Nights like tonight it’s easy to let up on the gas, but if you want to do what you say you want to do, we need to come out and play the game the right way.”
Brown made his last basket in the middle of the third quarter, giving the Celtics a 37-point lead. For the last 12 minutes, coach Joe Mazzulla rested his players.
Mazzulla said, “We think we can control how we come out and start games.” “We have a chance because we have too many good players.” It’s important to us that we have the right attitude for the whole game. It doesn’t mean that things will go our way. I liked how we did things a lot.”
Before 2009, Boston won six games in a row to start a season. That was the last time they had more than three wins in a row.
Tatum had 17 points in the third quarter. Brown was almost done for the night at that point.
“He was mean tonight and stuck to his spots,” Tatum said. “When you feel good about yourself, you get into a rhythm. Those tough shots are still tough, but they’re not as hard.”
Five timeouts were called in the first 30 minutes as Unseld did everything he could to stop Boston’s attack.
Daniel Gafford, a center for the Wizards, missed the game because his left ankle was hurt. First-round draft pick Bilal Coulibaly started for the first time. He had nine.
“You need to praise them,” Unseld said. “They have a lot of weapons.” The starting group we used tonight hadn’t played a single minute of practice.
