The Los Angeles Lakers were coming off a heartbreaking overtime loss to the Sacramento Kings when they welcomed the Orlando Magic to Staples Center on Monday night for the second half of a back-to-back.
LeBron James and Anthony Davis, two of the Lakers’ top players, both played significant minutes in Sacramento yet still made it to Orlando to face the Magic. Rui Hachimura and Jarred Vanderbilt weren’t a part of L.A.’s roster. Despite that, they were able to pull out a 104-103 victory over Orlando and improve to 2-2 on the season.
Despite Austin Reaves and Anthony Davis scoring for Los Angeles on their first two possessions, the Magic jumped out to an early 6-4 lead on the strength of two made 3-pointers.
While D’Angelo Russell got the fans going with a poster dunk on Paolo Banchero, the Lakers’ offensive woes continued in the first quarter.
Davis scored twice for the Lakers, and Christian Wood hit a 3-pointer off a steal by Russell as time expired in the quarter. After one quarter, the Lakers were up 29-24 thanks to a three-pointer from Gabe Vincent.
The Lakers carried over their momentum from the first to the second quarter, opening with a 6-0 run to grab a 10-point lead for the first time in the game. Gary Harris then went on a hot streak for Orlando, hitting four triples to pull the Magic right back into the game.
Jalen Suggs’ buzzer-beating three-pointer sent the Ravens up 58-54 at halftime, and the Lakers trailed despite some more easy baskets inside for Davis.
The Magic took an eight-point lead to start the third quarter thanks to some strong play from Franz Wagner. After a slow start to the season, the Los Angeles Dodgers got a much-needed triple from Austin Reaves.
After LeBron picked up a clear path foul against Wagner, the Lakers went on a 9-0 run to close out the third quarter and take back the lead, 81-80.
When Cole Anthony opened the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer, it put a stop to the Lakers’ streak, but James quickly answered by driving to the hoop for an easy layup. Harris continued his hot shooting from the first half by knocking down an open 3-pointer to extend Orlando’s lead to five.
Despite being down 98-96, Russell kept his team in it by hitting a clutch 3-pointer midway through the fourth quarter. James and Russell then made huge threes in the closing 90 seconds to put Los Angeles back on top.
The Magic were down 104-103 with 20 seconds left when James missed a layup and gave the ball back to his team. Suggs drove the ball to the basket directly at Davis, but Davis was able to block the shot. With a chance to tie it up, the Magic missed two 3-pointers in the final seconds before Russell iced the game with a pair of free throws for the Lakers.
