The Los Angeles Lakers lost a tough game in OT to the Sacramento Kings. On Monday night, they played the second game of a back-to-back at home against the Orlando Magic.
Even though they played a lot in Sacramento, LeBron James and Anthony Davis were still able to play against the Magic. But Rui Hachimura and Jarred Vanderbilt were not on L.A. Even so, they still beat Orlando in a close game, 104–103, to move to 2-2 on the season.
The Magic got off to a great start, making three-pointers on their first two plays to go ahead 6-4. Austin Reaves and Anthony Davis made layups for L.A.
Early on, D’Angelo Russell got the crowd excited with a slam dunk on Paolo Banchero. However, the Lakers had trouble scoring early on, which has been a theme this season so far.
The Lakers did have a little run near the end of the quarter, though. Davis scored two baskets and Christian Wood made a three and Russell stole the ball. After Gabe Vincent made his first three-pointer of the season, the Lakers were ahead 29–24.
The Lakers kept up their new flow in the second quarter, going on a 6-0 run to take their first lead of 10 points or more. Then Orlando’s Gary Harris hit four three-pointers in a row, which put his team right back in the game.
Even though Davis made some more easy baskets inside, the Lakers were still behind at halftime, 58–54, after Jalen Suggs made a three-pointer at the bell.
At the start of the third quarter, Franz Wagner got going for the Magic and helped them build an eight-point lead. While Austin Reaves was having a rough start to the year, he finally got a triple to get for L.A.
The Lakers went on a 9-0 run to end the quarter and take back the lead at 81-80 at the three-minute mark. LeBron got a clear-path foul on Wagner.
Cole Anthony made a long three-pointer to start the fourth quarter and end the Lakers’ run. However, James quickly answered by going to the basket for an easy layup. Harris then picked up where he left off in the first half and made a wide open three-pointer to put Orlando ahead by five points.
In the middle of the fourth quarter, Russell made a big three-point shot to keep his team in the game. He then made some free throws to cut the lead to 98-96. Then James and Russell made huge three-pointers in the last 90 seconds to put L.A. back ahead.
The Magic got the ball back with 20 seconds left after James missed a shot. They were behind 104–103. Davis blocked Davis’s shot when Suggs took the ball to the basket. The shot missed. Then Russell made two free throws to put the Lakers ahead by three points. The Magic had one last chance, but they missed two three-point shots to end the game.
