After Keldon Johnson’s basket with 1.2 seconds left gave San Antonio their first lead, they defeated the Phoenix Suns 115-114.
Devin Vassell’s 10 fourth-quarter points pulled the Spurs back into the game late on Wednesday (AEDT) after they trailed by 20 points in Phoenix.
As Durant searched for a pass, Johnson (27 points) picked his pocket after the Suns in-bounded the ball in the waning seconds.
The 24-year-old tore into the paint and stepped back for the winning jumper to end San Antonio’s nine-game losing streak to the Suns.
Top overall pick Victor Wembanyama missed his first five shots in his fourth NBA game before dunk in the waning seconds of the first half.
He scored 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds in 28 minutes to help the Spurs, who finished last in the western conference, go 2-2.
In other news, LA Clippers recruit James Harden was in attendance as his team defeated Orlando Magic 118-102.
The Clippers’ bench won’t have Harden since the massive trade from the Philadelphia 76ers is still pending.
But the Clippers didn’t need the 10-time NBA All-Star to beat the Magic, who are 2-2 after two straight losses.
LA won comfortably after a 26-6 third-quarter outburst powered by Paul George for 27 points and Russell Westbrook for 18.
The New York Knicks defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers 109-91 in their first encounter since eliminating them from the 2023 playoffs.
Julius Randle and Jalen Brunson both scored 19 points as the Knicks led for three quarters.
“It doesn’t matter what happened in the past, that’s all history,” Brunson said of the teams’ first post-playoff match.
“The only advantage is when you get back to playing certain teams, you can lean on certain tendencies against them.”
