Many NBA experts believe that the Boston Celtics’ six best players will need to give up some of their scoring game in order for the team to be at its best. However, one well-known NBA expert disagrees with this view.
Dan Favale of Bleacher Report recently said that All-NBA Celtics forward Jayson Tatum is the fourth-most likely player in the league to score 30 or more points per game in 2023–24. This is despite the fact that most people think that many of Boston’s stars will get fewer touches this season.
“It took more brainpower than anyone else on this list to figure out where to put Jayson Tatum,” Favale writes. As Favale puts it, “On the one hand, he just averaged more than 30 points per game last year and still has one of the NBA’s most complete scoring packages.” This includes “ridiculously difficult off-the-bounce 3s and mid-rangers,” as well as “streak dunks on the break and blow-bys in semi-transition” and “bullying drives from a standstill and ascendant contact-drawing.”
“On the other hand, the Boston Celtics have a lot of great players at the top of their roster.” Even though Tatum has already scored more than 30 points this season, it’s not clear how much scoring he will do with Jaylen Brown, Jrue Holiday, and Kristaps Porzingis on his team. The B/R critic says, “Opening night against the New York Knicks put some of the doubt to rest.” “Every game, Brown and Holiday won’t just take 21 shots together, but Tatum is just as important to the Celtics’ offense.”
“They will trust him to run the offense in crunch time, and since there aren’t many players after the starting five, he could end up playing 36 minutes or more per game.”
We think this is a bit of a stretch, but it’s also possible and within the realm of realistic. This number is near the top of the curve, but if Tatum is the MVP prospect that many people think he is, he’ll need to be right there to win.
