Basketball and taking pride in one’s work are both deeply ingrained in New England. The 2023–24 Boston Celtics City Edition uniform pays tribute to both the city where basketball was first played (Springfield, MA) and the craftsmanship that has been a source of pride for hundreds of years. The Celtics will play their first NBA In-Season Tournament game on November 10, which is also the first day they will wear their new City Edition outfit.

The City Edition Uniform for this year has the following features:

There is a beveled BOSTON wordmark on the front of the shirt that is based on the front of the Springfield, MA YMCA, which is where basketball was invented, and debossed graphics, which have been on basketballs for over a hundred years.

Bar tacks are a type of sewing used to strengthen certain parts of a garment. They are used to decorate the side panels of the jersey and shorts, which have a basket-weave effect. That’s because the bar tack looks a lot like the tacks used to hold a fruit basket together. The woven parts show that it was made by hand and show the link between New England and basketball.

The placement of the anthem includes a maker’s plate that draws from Boston’s past of fine furniture makers and proudly shows where and when basketball was first played.

The outfit makes it seem like Boston is a place where people make things. The team showed off their new City Edition outfits at Boston, MA’s North Bennet Street School. North Bennet Street School was the first trade school in the United States. It opened in 1881 to keep craft practices alive and to promote them.

As part of the launch of the City Edition, the Boston Celtics Shamrock Foundation is giving away eight real 2023–24 City Edition jerseys that have been signed by current players. The money raised will go toward the foundation’s social efforts to bring people together, give them power, and lift them up. You must be at least 18 years old and in Massachusetts at the time of entry to be eligible.

Also, the Celtics and VistaPrint are inviting people with season passes to a City Edition Celebration event at Jack’s Abby Craft Lagers. The event will honor the craft details of the uniform and give people a look behind the scenes of Banner City, the Celtics’ official craft beer.

Fans will be able to buy the 2023–24 City Edition uniforms in stores starting today. The jerseys and other items in the collection, such as clothing, hats, and accessories, will be available on the Celtics official website (Celtics.com/shop) and at TD Garden’s ProShop.
