Off the Court Victory: Stephen Curry Clinches the 2022-23 J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award for Golden State

Pro Basketball Writers Association announced on Thursday that Golden State Warriors superstar Steph Curry has earned the 2023 J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award for his “inspiring work in the community.”

“[Stephen Curry’s] efforts include proмoting youth literacy, fitness, and nutrition, and fostering gender equity in sports,” the PBWA noted of the 14-year NBA veteran and MVP of the league’s 75th anniversary game. Throughout the season, Curry is known to make time for fans and community groups.

For the 2022-23 season, Curry competed for the award alongside Paul George of the Los Angeles Clippers, Wenyen Gabriel of the Los Angeles Lakers, and Grant Williams of the Boston Celtics.

The 35-year-old was named to the All-Star Game and All-NBA Team for the eighth time after averaging 29.4 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 6.3 assists in 56 games this season.

The PBWA, however, put an emphasis on his off-court accomplishments, including as his work with the Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation that he and his wife founded, the 10th anniversary of their Christmas with the Currys event, and his address on sports equity at the White House party honoring the Warriors’ NBA championship.

Each year, the PBWA recognizes an NBA player, coach, or athletic trainer who has demonstrated exceptional service to the community by bestowing upon them the honor named for the league’s second commissioner. More than two hundred writers and editors make up the group and frequently oversee the league.

This is the first year an award winner has been announced since the 2019–20 season; the pandemic prevented awards from being given out in both of the previous years. In 2020, while playing with the Indiana Pacers, Malcolm Brogdon was honored with the J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award.
