The Los Angeles Lakers were blown out by the Orlando Magic on the first stop on their road trip. They were hoping for a better outcome when they got to South Beach to play the Miami Heat.
But Los Angeles couldn’t finish the comeback and Miami beat them 108–107.
From outside, Austin Reaves and D’Angelo Russell made back-to-back threes to get the Lakers off to a great start. Los Angeles had trouble on the inside with Bam Adebayo, but their defense got stronger and they took a 19-14 lead.
LeBron James looked good on offense back in Miami as he looked for his shots, but the Heat stayed right on their heels. But at the end of the first quarter, both teams were tied 33–33. Anthony Davis got things going with some easy baskets.
At the start of the second, the Heat bench began to attack. They went on a quick 7-2 run to take the lead 40–35. They tried to get back into the game by going for the basket, and they were able to tie it at 47 for both teams.
Prince didn’t seem hurt in his knee at all as he played well on both ends of the court and even made a three-pointer to put L.A. back ahead. But the Heat scored again near the end of the second, leaving the Lakers behind 62–59.
Davis went back to the locker room before the end of the half because he looked like he hurt himself. Later, it was said that Davis had a cramp in his hip or groin, but he came back to start the third quarter.
After Prince scored a few baskets to start the second half, the Lakers had to call a break because Davis was having trouble moving. Christian Wood then came in to replace Davis. James got the crowd excited with a couple of old-school dunks, and Davis made it back after going back to the locker room twice.
The Heat went on a 10-0 run with good scoring, which made things worse for the Lakers. Things got worse when it became clear that Davis couldn’t go. Los Angeles started the fourth quarter behind 90–79.
James tried to get the team excited again with another huge dunk, and Reaves’ three-pointer cut the lead to six points. But Miami answered with a short run, and D’Angelo Russell was thrown out of Los Angeles after fighting with the officials.
Even with all the problems, the purple and gold were able to come back in the middle of the fourth to get within a couple of points. James took over the game at the very end, giving L.A. a chance to steal it. But Cam Reddish missed the game-winning shot from the corner, and the Lakers lost again.
