The Orlando Magic beat the Los Angeles Lakers badly in their first game on their road trip. They thought things would go better when they played the Miami Heat in South Beach.
They tried to come back, but failed, and Miami beat them 108–107.
Austin Reaves and D’Angelo Russell made back-to-back threes from outside to get the Lakers off to a great start. They had trouble on the inside with Bam Adebayo, but their defense got better, and they went ahead 19–14.
Back in Miami, LeBron James looked good as he tried to make shots, but the Heat stayed right behind them. But both teams were tied 33–33 at the end of the first quarter. Anthony Davis first made some easy baskets to get things going.
The Heat bench started to attack at the start of the second. They quickly won seven straight games to go ahead 40–35. At 47–47, both teams were able to tie the game. They tried to get back into it by going for the basket.
Prince played well on both ends of the court and even made a three-pointer to put L.A. back ahead. He didn’t look like his knee hurt at all. But the Heat scored again near the end of the second, making the score 62–59 for the Heat.
Davis went back to the locker room before the half ended because he looked like he hurt himself. Later, it was said that Davis had a cramp in his hip or groin, but he came back to play the third quarter.
The Lakers had to take a break because Davis was having trouble moving after Prince made a few points to start the second half. Then Christian Wood came in to take Davis’s place. James did some old-school dunks that got the crowd excited, and Davis made it back after going to the locker room twice.
The Heat scored a lot of points during a 10-0 run, which made things worse for the Lakers. When it became clear that Davis couldn’t go, things got worse. At the start of the fourth quarter, Los Angeles was down 90–79.
With another big dunk, James tried to get the team excited again. Reaves’ three-pointer cut the lead to six points. But Miami came back with a short run, and D’Angelo Russell was kicked out of Los Angeles for arguing with the referees.
It was hard, but the purple and gold were able to come back in the middle of the fourth to get within a few points. At the very end, James took over the game, which gave L.A. a chance to steal it. The Lakers lost again because Cam Reddish missed the shot from the corner that would have won the game.
