Jayson Tatum was named Eastern Conference Player of the Week

Jayson Tatum, a forward for the Boston Celtics, has been named the NBA Eastern Conference Player of the Week, the NBA said today. Tatum gets his 10th NBA Player of the Week award. He now has 10, putting him third in Celtics history, behind Paul Pierce (17) and Larry Bird (15).

Tatum scored 31.7 points per game last week, which was the most in the NBA. He was also one of only two players to average at least 30.0 points and 9.0 rebounds, which helped the Celtics go 3-0. The Celtics beat Washington (126–107), Indiana (155–104), and Brooklyn (124–114) to make their winning streak five games.

Tatum scored at least 30 points in all three games. He shot 58.9 percent from the field and 54.2 percent from three-point range, but he only played for three quarters in the Washington and Indiana games. With 4.3 three-pointers made per game in 31.7 minutes, he made more than any other player in the Eastern Conference.

Tatum was picked third overall in the 2017 draft. He scored his 10,000th point in the second quarter of Saturday’s win over the Nets, passing Antoine Walker to become the youngest player in the team’s history to do so. It’s only happened 10 times in NBA history: LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant, Carmelo Anthony, Tracy McGrady, Devin Booker, Bob McAdoo, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Dwight Howard. Tatum is the 11th player to do it.

Tatum had a double-double last week against the Pacers (30 points, 12 rebounds) and the Nets (32 points, 11 rebounds). With 33, he passed Kevin McHale for seventh place in Celtics history in 30-point double-doubles.

In a 51-point win over Indiana on November 1, Tatum scored 21 points in the first half (6-12 FG, 2-4 3FG). It was the third-largest spread in Celtics history. Boston scored 155 points in that game, which was the second-highest score in the team’s history. The record high score was 173 points against the Minneapolis Lakers in 1959 (155–104).
