Monday night’s 108–107 loss to the Miami Heat was cut short early because Anthony Davis had hip pain.
When Davis drove inside against Bam Adebayo at the Kaseya Center, he seemed to hit his left hip and had to leave the game before halftime. After he hit Adebayo, he stayed in for a few plays, but all of a sudden, he pulled up in clear pain on the other end and left the game. Davis then tried to come back for the second half, but he only played for less than two minutes before the Lakers took him out and sent him back to the locker room. In the third quarter, Davis did get back into the game, but he hurt himself again with only a few minutes left in the quarter.
Davis didn’t come back after that. During the 25 minutes, he scored nine points and grabbed six rebounds.
“Off the spin move, it was just… not right.” By way of Spectrum SportsNet, Davis said, “It blew up.” “It felt good when we got out of halftime, but then it just blew up again.” Then I went to wrap it up. It felt fine for a while, but then it started to hurt again.
Davis, who is 30 years old, has scored 26.3 points and grabbed 13 rebounds per game this season, which is his fifth with the Lakers. At 38.8 minutes per game so far this season, that’s also the second-most in the league and a career-high.
Davis has been hurt a lot lately, so this injury is strange. However, neither he nor head coach Darvin Ham seemed too worried about it. Wednesday is the Lakers’ next game, against the Houston Rockets. Davis plans to be on the court.
On Monday night, the Heat had a 12-point lead late in the third quarter and looked like they were going to win. But the Lakers came back strong in the fourth quarter and kept Miami from scoring for the last four minutes of the game. The Lakers scored their last points of the night on a free throw by LeBron James with 2:39 left, which was good for the Heat. The Lakers missed their chance to come back.
James scored 30 points for the Heat, but he only made 13 out of 23 shots from the field. Austin Reaves scored 23 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, and dished out 9 assists. D’Angelo Russell scored 13 points to finish the game. Russell was kicked out of the game in the middle of the fourth quarter for arguing with officials during a break about a call that wasn’t made.
Butler scored 28 points to help the Heat win, and Adebayo had a triple-double with 22 points, 20 rebounds, and 10 assists. After dropping four games in a row, Miami’s win was their second in a row. On Wednesday, they play the Memphis Grizzlies.
