The Los Angeles Lakers started their road trip with a 108-107 loss to the Miami Heat. However, the most interesting thing to come out of this game is Anthony Davis’s status as a player for the Lakers.
Davis limped off the court late in the second quarter after what looked like a shot to the upper leg. After warming up after halftime, Davis tried to give it a chance at continuing to play after being diagnosed with a hip spasm. Even though he was having trouble getting about and was about to be replaced, he came back for a second try later in the third quarter.
Davis’s willingness to play through pain in the second half suggests his injury is not too severe. The big man detailed what happened after the game, telling Spectrum SportsNet that he injured his left adductor but is still hopeful of playing on Wednesday:
“Off the spin move, I just, I don’t know, kind of spazzed up. But after halftime, I felt great, and then it started acting up again. After that, I wrapped myself up, felt fine for a while (maybe three minutes), and then it spazzed out again. I’m going to be OK. On Wednesday, I’ll be all set to travel. But just take some medicine and get ready to suit up on Wednesday and it’ll all be fine.
Davis would continue by saying that while they’ll have a better idea after sleeping on it, he feels great going forward regardless:
“I am sure of myself. My physical self is familiar to me. Things may ease up or heat up overnight, but I’m still feeling upbeat about the situation. As I was saying, I managed to loosen up and improve the sensation. It just happened, so I’m sure I’ll be alright after giving myself some time to cool down and consulting with my trainer.
The Lakers can ill afford to lose Davis, who has been phenomenal this year, to injury at this point. Christian Wood was the only big man for the club as time ran out in Miami, as the team was already missing several front court players, including center Jaxson Hayes.
Davis’s main problem throughout his entire career has been, unsurprisingly, injuries and staying on the floor. Despite helping the Lakers win the NBA title in 2020 in his first full season with the team, Davis has missed at least 26 games in each of the three subsequent seasons due to injury.
The Lakers’ success significantly depends on Davis’s presence on the court, so let’s hope this is just a short setback. The team’s depth has been completely wiped out by injuries so far this season.
