Anthony Davis stepped up and led the way for the Los Angeles Lakers on a night when they needed him to.
James was not able to play against the Trail Blazers on Sunday at Crypto.com Arena because of a left leg contusion he got on Friday. It meant that everyone on the team had to do their best, and Davis had to play close to his best.
Davis did everything he needed to do to help his team win 116–110, even though it wasn’t the most impressive win. He scored 30 points by making 10 of 20 field goals and 12 of 12 free throws, grabbed 13 rebounds, gave out 6 assists, and blocked 3 shots.
Austin Reaves also scored 18 points and added four assists in 28 minutes. The guard who wasn’t picked in the draft gave Davis flowers.
“I saw the for tonight, so I knew today would be good for him… You have a chance whenever you have Anthony Davis. He changes the game in a lot of ways that the stats don’t even show them.
The star big man didn’t play against the Houston Rockets on Wednesday, and he was sorely missing in the paint and on the boards on both ends of the court. L.A. lost the boards 57–34 and the points in the paint 68–42 that night.
But on Sunday, the team beat Portland by 20 points in the paint and had three more rebounds than the guests.
