This will be the first time that superstars Devin Booker, Kevin Durant, and Bradley Beal all play on the same team.
The Phoenix Suns’ disappointing start to the season has put them at 4-6 in the NBA’s Western Conference. There is a laundry list of justifications for this. Everyone has an opinion on how to fix the problem, but most people think it would be solved if Devin Booker, Kevin Durant, and Bradley Beal all played together. Fourth-quarter shooting, offensive and defensive rotations, turnovers, substitution patterns; all will be right in the world if we see the big three.
Until all three of these players get significant playing time, rotations can be created around them, and team chemistry can be established, we still don’t know who the Suns really are. Both Bradley Beal and Devin Booker have missed time, so that hasn’t happened yet. Both Beal and Devin Booker have been dealing with injuries, Beal with tightness in his lower back and Booker with problems in his lower left leg. It started with his foot, progressed to his ankle, and now his calf is causing him to miss games.
There have been a total of 15 games missed by the duo of Devin Booker and Bradley Beal. The oldest of the three, at 35 years old, Kevin Durant has played in every game and is averaging 36.7 minutes per game.
Since Devin Booker has been given the green light to play, everything will change on Wednesday night against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Yes, all three of the major teams will debut in 2022-23.
So, what can we anticipate? Rust. More handovers are likely. A group that will benefit from teamwork training. The addition of talented players to the starting lineup is not a guarantee of success.
Basketball is a game of chemistry and feel, and when correctly matched with talent, winning occurs. However, chemistry like that takes time to cultivate. The ability to anticipate each other’s movements, locate one another quickly, and rely on one another while playing the game. These things need to be given time.
Consider also that playing stamina and the ability to adjust substitution patterns are both things that need work. Since his last game on November 2 against the San Antonio Spurs, Devin Booker has been sidelined. Bradley Beal, too, has needed some time to find his footing. Even though it would be great if the big three came out and completely destroyed the competition, we have to be practical.
