The Boston Celtics beat the New York Knicks 114–98 at TD Garden on Monday night. Jayson Tatum scored 23 of his game-high 35 points after halftime, including 14 in a fourth-quarter takeover. At the same time, news came out that his father, Justin Tatum, was named head coach of the Illawarra Hawks of the National Basketball League in Australia.
Tatum is filling in for Jacob Jackomas, who used to be Illawarra’s bench boss, but the title comes with the word “interim.” The Hawks added 6-foot-8 guard A.J. Johnson this summer. Johnson is expected to be picked in the first round of the 2024 NBA Draft. However, they’ve had a rough start to the 2023–24 season, with a 2–7 record that puts them last in the NBL standings, which is why they changed coaches.
Tatum worked for the franchise as a scout and special adviser. He was the coach of the Global Women’s Basketball Association team in St. Louis as well.
His son told Inside The Celtics the following about his dad’s new job after Boston beat New York.
“Yeah, I found out last night,” the four-time All-Star said. “I’m so proud of him and happy for him.” That’s a big move. I’m aware that he’s working to improve his teaching and resume. In high school, he won a lot of state wins with different teams. Has been in Australia for four months and is now the Hawks’ head coach. I’m happy for him and can’t wait for him to “turn that organization around.”
