On Tuesday night, the Los Angeles Lakers hosted the Memphis Grizzlies in a rematch from the playoffs the previous season for game two of the In-Season Tournament.
The Lakers won 134-107 over the Grizzlies with LeBron James back in the lineup after missing one game with a calf injury. With the win, the Lakers improved to 2-0 in the In-Season Tournament and 6-5 on the season.
To start the game, Anthony Davis had four points and two excellent blocks on Jaren Jackson Jr., right where he left off in the playoffs against the Grizzlies. However, the Grizzlies started strong from long range, making three shots before James added two of his own to put the Lakers up 15-9 at the first media break.
Davis got into a bit with Santi Aldama after getting pushed and then returning the favor during last year’s playoffs, suggesting that there is no love lost between these two clubs. Desmond Bane got in Davis’ face, provoking a little altercation that resulted in a double technical for both players. There were a total of five technicals called, but no ejections occurred, and play continued.
Austin Reaves and Rui Hachimura both had an immediate impact off the bench by knocking down 3-pointers, but Hachimura gave the lead right back by committing a flagrant foul by stepping into the shooting area of Aldama.
However, Hachimura scored twice more and Davis converted a putback to extend the Lakers’ lead to 37-26 at the end of the first quarter.
David Roddy entered the game for the Grizzlies and promptly had an impact, knocking down a pair of threes in the opening minutes of the second quarter.
Besides that, the Lakers kept rolling as Cam Reddish made two more 3-pointers from the corners to put them up 58-40.
The Grizzlies shot 46% from deep in the first half, but the Lakers shot 53%, so it didn’t matter. The Lakers’ halftime lead was 74-51 thanks in large part to a pair of baskets by D’Angelo Russell.
Starting the third quarter strong, the Lakers added to their lead on 3-pointers by Reddish and Taurean Prince.
Before Darvin Ham called timeout, James scored a 3-pointer to restore order after a brief run by Memphis trimmed the gap to 21.
Despite the Grizzlies’ run to end the third quarter, which cut the Lakers’ lead to 107-86, Russell went nuclear for the Lakers from there, scoring 12 straight points.
At the start of the fourth quarter, Reaves hit another three-pointer to keep the Lakers ahead by a comfortable margin. With another game slated for Wednesday, they were hoping to avoid re-incorporating Davis and James, but Hachimura and Reaves kept scoring to put the game out of reach.
