On Tuesday night, in a rematch from last year’s playoffs, the Los Angeles Lakers hosted the Memphis Grizzlies in their second game of the In-Season Tournament.
LeBron James returned to the Lakers lineup after missing one game with a calf injury, and his presence was vital in a 134-107 victory over the Grizzlies. With the win, the Lakers improved to 2-0 in the In-Season Tournament and 6-5 on the season.
Anthony Davis’s performance against the Grizzlies in the playoffs continued with four first-quarter points and two outstanding blocks on Jaren Jackson Jr. Early on, the Grizzlies’ three made three-pointers, but James answered with two of his own to give the Lakers a 15-9 lead at the first media timeout.
As Davis got into a bit with Santi Aldama after being pushed and then returned the favor, it’s clear that there is still some bad blood between these two teams from last year’s semifinals. Double technicals were called, and then Desmond Bane got in Davis’ face, prompting a brief altercation. Five technical fouls were called, but no one was dismissed, and the game went on.
Both Austin Reaves and Rui Hachimura made strong contributions off the bench by knocking down 3-pointers, but Aldama quickly tied the game when Hachimura committed a flagrant penalty by stepping into his shooting lane.
After two more baskets by Hachimura and a putback from Davis, the Lakers led by 37-26 at the end of the first quarter.
For the Grizzlies, David Roddy came in and scored two triples early in the second quarter.
Aside from then, it was all Lakers as Cam Reddish hit a pair of corner threes to help the visitors close the gap to 58-40.
In the first half, the Grizzlies were successful on 12 of 27 3-point tries, but it wasn’t enough because the Lakers made 11 of 20. The Lakers’ halftime lead was 74-51 thanks to D’Angelo Russell’s two points.
The Lakers continued their strong play to start the third quarter, as Reddish and Taurean Prince each scored a 3-pointer to further increase the Lakers’ lead.
Actually, Memphis had a run and got as close as 21, but Darvin Ham called timeout, and then James calmed things down with a three.
Despite a surge by the Grizzlies at the end of the third quarter that cut the Lakers’ lead to 107-86, Russell scored 12 straight points for the Lakers from that point on.
To keep the Lakers comfortable, Reaves opened the fourth quarter with a three-point shot. They were hoping that Hachimura and Reaves would be able to put the game away so that Davis and James wouldn’t have to come back in, as they had another game set for Wednesday.
