Golden State Warriors star forward Draymond Green was penalized five games for his antics in Tuesday’s mid-season tournament game against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Klay Thompson, Rudy Gobert, and Jaden McDaniels were fined $25,000 for their roles in the event.
Green’s suspension includes the in-season tournament game against the San Antonio Spurs, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
Thompson and McDaniels fought early in the game, prompting Minnesota center Rudy Gobert to intervene. Green, perhaps defending Thompson, grabbed Gobert from behind and threw his arm around his neck.
Green, Thompson, and McDaniels were dismissed after Green held Gobert in the headlock for a long time. The Warriors lost their fourth straight game 104-101.
After the game, Warriors coach Steve Kerr stated Green was supporting his friend.
“Klay should never have been ejected. It was absurd “Kerr. “That upset me. The Draymond part involved Rudy holding Klay’s neck. Which is why Draymond pursued Rudy.”
Green was removed from Golden State’s 118-110 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Nov. 11 after collecting a second technical penalty for pushing Cavs player Donovan Mitchell.
Green’s aggressive demeanor gives the Warriors an energy and intensity they can’t get elsewhere. He went too far against the Timberwolves.
Golden State will struggle to replace Green’s production during his suspension. While his statistics of 8.8 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 5.7 assists are modest, his intangibles and defense are unmatched.
The Warriors will need players like Jonathan Kuminga and Dario Šarić to fill Green’s role in the frontcourt without him. Golden State will struggle in the Western Conference without Green, but it hopes to avoid an early-season hole.
