The Los Angeles Lakers went back home and played the Houston Rockets on Sunday night, hoping to get back at them for losing earlier.
LeBron James and Anthony Davis both played even though they were hurt, and they helped the Lakers win by a score of 105–104.
Early in the game, Davis scored two baskets in a row and D’Angelo Russell made a 3-pointer to give the Lakers a 7-0 lead. However, Dillon Brooks scored for the Rockets to tie the game.
They got off to a slow start, but Fred VanVleet made a pair of three-pointers to really turn things around. The Lakers, led by Taurean Prince, were very cold, which let Houston get its first double-digit lead.
With a long three, Austin Reaves got the second unit going offensively, but the Lakers were still behind 28–20 going into the second quarter.
At the start of the second quarter, the Lakers scored six straight points. James set up Rui Hachimura for two easy layups, which made the Rockets quickly call a break. James then scored a three-pointer and made two free throws to put the Lakers ahead.
But L.A. played badly near the end of the half. Brooks made another three-pointer and Jalen Green made a layup, giving the Rockets a 55-49 lead a the half.
In the third quarter, the Lakers had a clear plan: they were going to attack Rockets big man Alperen Sengun. Sengun got called for four fouls early in the second half and had to go to the bench. That let Davis get to work down low, and he and James made some easy baskets to give the Lakers the lead again.
Their offense was having trouble, but Brooks and Jeff Green made some big shots to keep their team in the game. The Lakers couldn’t make a clear 3-point shot until Cam Reddish made one. James then made a basket against Brooks to give L.A. an 81-75 lead going into the fourth.
When James scored to start the fourth quarter, the Lakers had their biggest lead yet, eight points. However, the Rockets began to chip away at the lead to keep it close. Back-to-back threes by Brooks, who was already having a great night, pulled them within one point, 94-93, with a few minutes left in the game.
Luckily, James was also on fire and answered with his own three-pointer to keep the Lakers in the game while Davis took a short break for five fouls.
As the last minute began, the score was tied at 100. Davis was then called for a charge and struck out. But the Lakers were able to make a big stop, and then Reaves made another long three to put the Lakers ahead with 23.7 seconds left.
Sengun then made a layup to pull the Rockets within one point. Reaves then made one of two free throws to put L.A. ahead by two points. Then Sengun easily scored again with four seconds left to tie the game.
The Lakers had one last chance before the buzzer, but James was fouled with 1.9 seconds left. The Lakers won because he made one free throw.
