Looking for revenge for their previous loss, the Los Angeles Lakers welcomed the Houston Rockets to their home court on Sunday night.
Even though they were both sick, LeBron James and Anthony Davis played a key role in the Lakers’ 105-104 victory.
Following consecutive baskets by Davis and a 3-pointer by D’Angelo Russell, the Lakers jumped out to a 7-0 lead. The Rockets finally scored when Dillon Brooks scored.
After a sluggish start, the Rockets were on fire thanks to two 3-pointers by Fred VanVleet. Houston was able to get its first lead of double digits as Taurean Prince and the Lakers remained icicle-cold.
The Lakers carried a 28-20 deficit into the second quarter, but a deep triple by Austin Reaves helped spark the second unit’s offensive efforts.
James assisted on two uncontested layups by Rui Hachimura as the Lakers opened the second quarter with a six-point run, prompting the Rockets to call a timeout. Then James got to work for the Lakers, putting them ahead with a 3-pointer and two free throws.
The Rockets took a 55-49 advantage into halftime thanks to 3-pointers from Brooks and layups from Jalen Green, while Los Angeles struggled in the last minutes of the half.
Alperen Sengun, a big player for the Rockets, ran into foul trouble early in the second half and had to go to the bench with four fouls. The Lakers’ third-quarter strategy was to attack Sengun. Because of that, Davis was able to get to work on the low block, and he and James scored several easy baskets to put the Lakers back ahead.
Despite the Rockets’ offensive struggles, they were able to stay in the game thanks to big buckets from Brooks and Jeff Green. Until Cam Reddish made it, the Lakers were unable to create an open 3-point shot. The Los Angeles Lakers took an 81-75 advantage into the fourth quarter thanks to James’s layup attempt on Brooks.
Starting the fourth quarter with a score from James, the Lakers suddenly had their largest lead of the game at eight points, but the Rockets began to chip away at the lead to keep it close. As time ran out, Brooks kept his impressive performance going by making back-to-back threes, bringing them within one point at 94-93.
Despite Davis taking a brief break due to five fouls, the Lakers were able to maintain a slim lead thanks to a three from James.
After a scoreless last minute, Davis was fouled out after being penalized for a charge. But the Lakers got a huge stop, and Reaves hit another deep 3-pointer to give the Lakers the lead with 23.7 seconds remaining.
After Sengun drew the Rockets within one with a basket, Reaves scored one of two free throws to put the Lakers up by two. With only four seconds remaining, Sengun leveled the score with another easy goal.
As a result, the Lakers had one more chance to beat the buzzer before James was fouled with 1.9 seconds remaining. Thanks to his one free throw, the Lakers were able to secure the victory.
