Curry’s Magic: 32-Point Performance Propels Warriors to Thrilling 121-116 Victory Against Rockets

The Warriors have won two games this season, both at home.

Monday night’s 121-116 victory over the Houston Rockets improved the Warriors’ record to 7-8 for the season. Even though it took longer than expected, the Warriors have won their second home game of the season.

The Rockets took advantage of the Dubs’ shaky start to the game to take a commanding lead in the first quarter. Nevertheless, the bench unit was led by Dario Šarić, Jonathan Kuminga, and Moses Moody to a robust end to the quarter, resulting in a 29-27 lead for Golden State.

The Warriors extended their advantage against the Rockets in the second half, but they still couldn’t seal the deal. To keep up with the Warriors’ offense—which was shooting at an incredible efficiency, getting to the free throw line frequently, and not committing many turnovers—Houston dominated the glass, collecting nearly twice as many offensive rebounds as Golden State. They were able to use those second-chance opportunities to score.

At the end of the first half, though, the Dubs hit their stride and made a number of huge plays, extending their lead to ten points. For most of the second half, the lead remained in that range; the Warriors were never in jeopardy of losing the lead, but they also weren’t able to pull away for a blowout. Even though the Rockets scored a couple of points in the last seconds to make it seem closer, Golden State was the better team the whole time.

Stephen Curry breaks record for most minutes played in Warriors franchise history

Steph Curry, who needed no introduction, took charge, scoring 32 points on 14 field goal attempts to seal the deal. This was Klay Thompson’s first 20-point performance of the season; he shot 7-for-16 from the field, including 5-for-11 from beyond the arc.

In addition to his outstanding performance, Chris Paul had a stellar game with 15 points, 6 rebounds, 12 assists, 2 steals, and a plus/minus of +12. Šarić continued his season-long pattern of productive bench play in a game when CP3 had a spectacular performance. While starter center Kevon Looney did not play as much, Šarić played more minutes and scored 18 points.

With six players posting double-digit points, Houston’s attack was erratic. Even though he shot a dismal 1-for-8 from outside the arc, Fred VanVleet still managed a double-double (10 points and 14 assists).

Thanks to Draymond Green’s ongoing absence and Šarić’s increased rotational involvement, the youthful Rockets front court was able to take advantage of the depleted defense of the Dubs. By combining their stats, Jabari Smith Jr. and Alperen Şengün scored 45 points, grabbed 23 rebounds, handed out 7 assists, blocked 3 shots, and stole 2 steals.
