5) From 1962 to 1963, Wilt Chamberlain
Wilt Chamberlain was a beast in his peak in the 1960s and early 1970s, especially in the interior, and the 1962–1963 season was no different.
During that season, Chamberlain finished with a 31.82 point efficiency rating, averaging a massive 44.8 points, 24.3 rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game.
The San Francisco Warriors’ miserable 31-49 record at the end of the season was a setback and an indication that Chamberlain required more assistance.
4) From 2019 to 2020, Giannis Antetokounmpo
In terms of the PER, Giannis Antetokounmpo’s first of two GOAT-caliber seasons occurred in 2019–2020.
Antetokounmpo finished with a 31.86 PER, averaging 29.5 points, 13.6 rebounds, 5.6 assists, 1.0 blocks, and 1.0 steals per game.
Had the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic not disrupted the season, Antetokounmpo was actually on pace for a higher PER; however, when play resumed in a bubble in Orlando, his numbers somewhat declined.
3) 2021–2022 Giannis Antetokounmpo
Antetokounmpo performed better in the NBA’s first full season following the pandemic than he did in his bubble season, when he was vying for back-to-back titles.
In 2021–2022, he finished with a 32.05 points, 11.6 rebounds, 5.8 assists, 1.4 blocks, and 1.1 steals per game.
One of Antetokounmpo’s most memorable moments from that season was when he scored 50 points on 17 of 21 shots, which was only the 12th occasion in history that someone had shot 80% or more from the field to score 50 points. But in the end, the NBA championship had to be given up by the Milwaukee Bucks.
2) 1961–1962 Wilt Chamberlain
The NBA season of 1961–1962 will always be remembered for Wilt Chamberlain’s 100-point game. But he also had an incredible season average that year, putting up an astounding 50.4 points, 25.7 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game for a 32.08 PER.
A noteworthy statistic from that season is that Chamberlain played a lot of overtime games with an average of 48.5 minutes per game.
1) Jokic Nikola (2021–2022).
Wilt Chamberlain and Giannis Antetokounmpo topped this list, but Nikola Jokic had the greatest PER season of any player.
The record PER was set by Chamberlain’s GOAT-caliber 1961–1962 season, which stood until Jokic’s 2021–2022 MVP season with the Denver Nuggets. Jokic ended the game with a 32.85 point per game, 13.8 rebounds, 7.9 assists, 1.5 steals, and 0.9 blocks.
Jokic’s PER is too remarkable for someone who isn’t even recognized as an outstanding defender, especially in light of the fact that Chamberlain and Antetokounmpo were well-known rim defenders in their heyday (Chamberlain would have easily been at number one if blocks were already being scored then).
The following season, Jokic’s PER slightly decreased, but he still managed to win the NBA title—something far more impressive than eye-popping numbers.
