Kevin Durant Takes Center Stage in Nike’s Black History Month Campaign Spotlight

The Beaverton-based company has released unique apparel and footwear collections in commemoration of Black History Month every February since 2005. Switching from its yearly “Royal Pack” of philanthropic projects to its “Future Movement” program, Nike will provide $140 million to local charities over the next ten years.

Consequently, five Black persons are being highlighted in the 2023 BHM campaign for making strides ahead and exemplifying the principles of putting one’s own well-being first so as to serve and enhance society, thereby amplifying the aim of communal well-being.

Thanks to his charitable endeavors with the Durant Family Foundation, Phoenix Suns star Kevin Durant has been the center of good attention recently. A two-time NBA champion, Durant has gained invaluable insight on the importance of vulnerability, perspective, and “Black Consciousness” throughout his time playing this sport. Insights from Durant’s own struggles with these core issues drive his work with nonprofits that seek to equip the next generation to monitor their own mental and physical well-being.

Olympic track and fielder Anna Cockrell, three-time Olympic fencer Daryl Homer, professional hockey player Saroya Tiker, and rapper Watts Stix will all be joining Nike Inc. in their continued investment and support of organizations fighting systemic inequalities through and beyond sport, with a focus on economic empowerment and social justice.
