Even though LeBron James is no longer a player for Cleveland, the city still belongs to him, with the locals still screaming his name and wearing his shirts.
However, it wasn’t James making the biggest plays or scoring the biggest shots on Saturday as the Lakers kicked off a four-game trip. James got plenty of assistance, more so than on any other night this season.
Seven Lakers, headed by Anthony Davis, scored in double digits as they defeated the Cavaliers 121-115 by outlasting them.
After dropping their opening five games away at Crypto.com Arena, the Lakers won their third straight road game with 32 points from Davis, 22 from James, and 15 from Austin Reaves with 10 assists.
Although James’ influence on the Cavaliers is obvious, it was evident on Saturday. In James’ hometown of Akron, Ohio, a museum honoring his achievements opened earlier in the day. In addition, the Cavaliers played a montage during the first quarter that featured James’ career-defining baskets, ranging from his first points to the day he broke the NBA scoring record in his final season.
But he was unable to get a good whistle in the latter part of Saturday’s contest. He was called for a technical foul for lingering on the rim after a coach’s challenge resulted in the overturning of a foul against the Cavaliers.
Nevertheless, in the closing seconds, the Lakers (10-7) were able to get the defensive rebounds and stops they required.
Donovan Mitchell led Cleveland with 22 points and six assists on four of his eighteen field goal attempts. Mitchell had missed the previous four games due to a right hamstring strain.
Once more, the Lakers were severely lacking in depth on the wing due to injuries to Cam Reddish (groin), Rui Hachimura (nose), and Jarred Vanderbilt (heel). Max Christie, a guard in his second year, continued to start. Due to the team’s lack of players, Christian Wood and Jaxson Hayes experienced an increase in their roles.
In the first half, all three of them had outstanding offensive performances, scoring 30 points between them on just 15 attempts.
“You must always see the silver lining in situations. Rather than waiting until late March or early April to start making money, I would rather that this happen now with some of our personnel. Hence, you simply need to ride out the storm, Lakers head coach Darvin Ham stated prior to tipoff. Being depth at every position gives you a chance to weather all of this and attempt to get through at a high level, the highest level possible. The blueprint for our team that we put together and tried to execute this summer is coming to reality, and we’re needing these components.”
With the exception of a few turnover problems, the Lakers’ offensive performance was nearly at its peak. Over half of the team’s shots were made, and they scored 70 points in the first half.
