Though he did it in a drubbing at the hands of Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid and the league-leading record-holders, LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers set yet another record on Monday night.
The Sixers thrashed the Lakers 138-94, and James moved up the NBA minutes list to surpass Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for first place. With two minutes remaining in the third quarter, Embiid recorded his sixth triple-double of his career. Embiid recorded a career-high seven games with ten or more assists, including his first of the year.
There was never any serious confrontation between Embiid and James. Even with his 18 points in 29 minutes, James was unable to cut into the 76ers’ lead.
For the 76ers, Tyreke Maxey scored 31 points. In the game against the Heat, Anthony Davis recorded 17 points and 11 boards.
The Sixers still managed to outscore the Lakers 40-14 even without Embiid in the fourth quarter.
After getting off to a blazing start, the 76ers extended their lead to 25 thanks to 13 first-half 3-pointers (their season-high) on 26 attempts.
Maxey scored a goal. However, the Lakers exposed every Sixer who wasn’t Maxey or Embiid. Halftime 3-pointers came from Marcus Morris Sr. and Patrick Beverley. With a layup, Embiid extended his lead to 64–39.
In the first half, the Lakers took ten 3-point attempts but only made seven.
As Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts stood by the sidelines, Embiid slammed the door on Davis with such force that the slap could be heard from rows away on the court.
In an effort to solidify his candidacy for his maiden All-Star selection, Maxey scored 20 points at halftime. On the road to a third consecutive scoring championship, Embiid had 17 points.
The 76ers wasted a chance to clinch their 12th victory.
Additionally, they gained points for trash talking when forward Paul Reed referred to Davis as “a big flopper.”
“You know, he’s gonna be flailing,” Reed commented during warmups.
The two coaches couldn’t understand why a substitute poked Davis.
Go watch over him, I suppose. The Lakers’ coach, Darvin Ham, wished Paul the best of luck.
A joke from 76ers coach Nick Nurse: “I’m going to have to go talk to Paul about that immediately after this.”.
That is unnecessary. Fouls and flops were never major concerns because of how uncompetitive the game was.
Following a two-game losing run, the 76ers won their second consecutive game, and Kelly Oubre Jr.’s return is possible shortly. Before being hurt in what is believed to have been a hit-and-run accident, Oubre played in eight games, averaging 16.3 points per contest. He was a part of shootaround and could go on the 76ers’ two-game road trip next week.
