To say the least, Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic has had a rough 48 hours.
Doncic and his fiancee Anamaria Goltes welcomed their daughter Gabriela into the world on Friday. Then, as a first-time father, Doncic returned to the Mavericks lineup on Saturday and nearly pulled off a huge 24-point fourth-quarter comeback after spearheading an NBA-record 30-0 run in the final session.
“First and foremost, it was the happiest day of my life.” “I got the baby, but today’s game was also a rollercoaster,” Doncic said after the Mavericks fell to the Thunder 126-120. “I’m so sad we didn’t win this game, but man, we gave a big, big effort.”
On Saturday, Doncic made NBA history in two ways: he tied Boston Celtics legend Larry Bird for ninth on the all-time triple-double list and became the first player in league history to record at least 35 points, 15 rebounds, 15 assists, two blocks, two steals, and five made 3-pointers in a game.
Despite the fact that the Mavericks have now lost six of their previous nine games and have had some terrible luck with injuries, Doncic was encouraged by his team’s comeback attempt and believes they will ‘win a lot of games’ this season.
“This team was impressive in the third and fourth quarters today.” We need to play [like] this more often, man. We’ll win a lot of games.”
Doncic finished his first game as a ‘Girl Dad’ with 36 points, 15 rebounds, and 18 assists on 11-22 shooting and 5-13 from three-point range. If this is Doncic’s concept of having ‘dad strength,’ then he’s probably right about the 11-8 Mavericks winning a lot more games this season.
Doncic and company will return to action on Wednesday against the Utah Jazz in the first of two In-Season Tournament consolation games for teams that did not win group play.
