With 50 points, 13 rebounds, and seven assists, Joel Embiid led the Philadelphia 76ers to a 131-126 victory over the Washington Wizards on Wednesday.
For the sixth time in his career, Embiid scored at least 50 points in a game after missing the previous two due to sickness. In the last 49.6 seconds, he made two free throws and a 15-foot jump shot to seal the win.
In his first game since Nov. 11, Tyrese Maxey contributed 26 points, De’Anthony Melton scored 19, and Kelly Oubre Jr. finished with 12 points. Kelly Oubre Jr. had previously suffered a broken rib and other unspecified injuries.
Two straight losses for the 76ers.
Tyus Jones scored 20, Daniel Gafford scored 18, and Jordan Poole led the Wizards with 23 points before fouling out with 1:58 remaining. Corey Kispert and Kyle Kuzma both scored sixteen points.
With 6.9 seconds left, Danilo Gallinari made a 3-pointer to put Washington behind 129-126.
Melton, though, responded with two free throws to secure the victory.
With 6:21 remaining in the fourth quarter, Oubre made a 3-pointer from the corner to give the team a 109-102 lead.
With 5:23 left, Gafford pulled down an offensive rebound and made a layup to bring the score down to 110-106.
With 4:52 remaining in the second, Kuzma pushed the Wizards ahead 50–40 with a runner in the lane.
With 3:09 remaining, Melton completed an 11-0 run to give the Sixers a one-point lead.
The Wizards lead 62-60 at the half after shooting 54.9 percent from the field. None of the nine Washington players who scored did so in double figures.
The Sixers, led by Embiid, scored 26 points in the first half. Maxey’s halfcourt shot at the buzzer brought the score within two points. In the first half, Philadelphia managed just two of sixteen 3-point attempts.
With 6:36 remaining in the third quarter, Gafford scored a massive two-handed slam to give Washington a 79-78 lead.
With 2:36 left, Embiid was called for a technical foul for disputing a foul, and Gallinari made the technical free throw to give the Wizards a 95-89 lead.
However, the Sixers answered with a 10-0 run, leading 99–95 at the end of the third quarter.
