In just three quarters of play following his first-ever triple-double in the first half of his career, Luka Doncic finished with 40 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists in the Dallas Mavericks’ 147-97 victory over the Utah Jazz on Wednesday night.
With his 60th triple-double of his career, Doncic overtook Larry Bird and took sole control of ninth place on the all-time career chart.
Doncic had 29 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists entering the last ninety seconds of the second quarter. With 1:11 remaining, after Keonte George missed a free shot, he collected a rebound. He lofted a pass inside to Dereck Lively II with 59 seconds remaining in the game, and Lively II’s slam earned him his tenth assist.
The American Airlines Center video boards showed the players’ real-time statistics, so the fans could watch Doncic’s growth and cheered when Lively scored a dunk. It was the NBA’s first-ever triple-double with 25 points in the first half.
The Mavericks scored their most points of the season, falling two points short of their highest-scoring game in regulation history.
Dallas came within one point of the franchise record set in November 2014 with a 123-70 victory over Philadelphia with a 52-point lead in the final minutes of play.
Doncic made 14 of 25 field goals and 6 of 12 three-pointers. He did not play in the fourth quarter, but he played 32 minutes.
In 20 minutes, Doncic shot 10 of 17 from the field and 6 of 10 from 3-point range to end the half. Dallas jumped out to a 74-51 lead while he was a plus-22.
In 349 games during the regular season, Doncic has recorded 60 triple-doubles. Bird performed 897.
Doncic got out to a strong start, making his first two shots in the first 57 seconds, both of which were beyond the arc.
For Dallas, Kyrie Irving scored 26 points. The Mavericks were without their top guards for their previous two games—Doncic (Friday against Memphis due to a childbirth) and Irving (Saturday against Oklahoma City due to a foot injury)—both of which were losses at home.
With 21 points, Ochai Agbaji led the Jazz. Leading scorers Jordan Clarkson and Lauri Markkanen were absent for Utah’s game. Additionally its top rebounder, Markkanen, has missed six straight games due to a hamstring injury. Due to a thigh injury, Clarkson missed his fourth game in five.
With 10 losses on the road in 11 games this season, the Jazz lead the NBA in road losses.
The NBA’s first-ever In-Season Tournament saw both clubs eliminated, therefore the match was added to the schedule last week.
