The Philadelphia 76ers led Washington by 29 points at the half thanks to three 3-pointers shot by Tyrese Maxey in a 14-0 run that started the game. Joel Embiid finished with 34 points and 10 rebounds in a 146-101 victory over the Wizards on Monday night.
Maxey scored two 3-pointers, Tobias Harris added another three-pointer, and Harris added two free throws to give the Sixers, who were still packing the arena, a 14-0 advantage that, yep, sealed the game’s outcome in the first two minutes.
The unfortunate Wizards (3–19) were never in the game.
The Wizards had seen this spectacle before, after all. Monday night’s halftime score for the 76ers was 75-46, their second halftime lead of the season. The other one? versus the Wizards on November 6.
Maxey scored 24 points and nailed five 3-pointers. With 21 points, Kyle Kuzma led Washington.
When they started, the Sixers’ 3-point percentage of 37% was excellent for ninth in the NBA. They converted 14 out of 29 3-pointers in the first half. With five from Maxey, three from Patrick Beverley, and Embiid’s only three of the half, the 76ers led 75–44 at the half.
Yes, that type of game was played.
With two games this week against Detroit and Charlotte, the 76ers (15-7) can improve their record. They won their third straight game. In the Eastern Conference, the Wizards, Pistons, and Hornets have the three poorest records. Next week’s matchup against Chicago, the 12th-place team in the East, will put the Sixers on a more difficult schedule.
The Sixers may be able to rest Embiid during the soft stretch. Against Atlanta on Friday, the two-time scoring champion and current MVP had an uncomfortable landing that caused a minor injury to his left knee. Embiid was a game-time decision despite finishing with an average of 33.3 points and 11.5 rebounds. During pregame warm-ups, he was the final Sixer to leave the court to test his knee.
His knee was in good condition. His performance was much more impressive.
The 76ers led 94-62 in the third quarter after Embiid scored his 30th point of the contest. Embiid officially checked out with 1:25 remaining in the third quarter, with the 76ers leading 105-65. He shot 14 of 20 points. He has eight games in a row with 30 points or more.
When Mike Muscala of Washington missed two consecutive free shots, 76ers supporters let up the loudest cheer of the game and received free fast-food chicken. Naturally, Muscala already enjoyed cult status in Philadelphia after he made the game-winning 3-pointer in a meaningless Oklahoma City game late in 2020, which caused the team to lose its draft position and have to send its pick to the 76ers in accordance with the terms of a previous transaction. Maxey was taken at number 21.
