Kevin Durant Shares Thoughts on Bronny James’ USC Basketball Debut: A Mentor’s Perspective

The highly anticipated collegiate basketball debut of Bronny James was ultimately played in front of a sold-out Galen Center crowd by USC. Even sports figures who weren’t there in person chose to watch, and NBA great Kevin Durant was among them.

A hearty welcome back. Given what happened earlier this year, Bronny James’ inaugural game might be seen as a comeback tale by many. James had to go to the hospital in July after collapsing unexpectedly while exercising. Doctors have determined that the James family’s loved one’s death was likely caused by “an anatomically and functionally significant Congenital Heart Defect which can and will be treated,” as stated in a family statement. It was miraculous to witness James walk on the hardwood again after months of treatment.

With his father, LeBron James, sitting in the front row, Bronny scored his first collegiate basket—a transition 3-pointer—and sent the Galen Center into a frenzy. The night’s other standout moment occurred when the 19-year-old attempted to pass the ball off the hoop in a manner similar to his famous father’s chase-down block.

Even though the USC Trojans lost to the Long Beach State 49ers in basketball, Bronny James may consider it a victory just to be back on the court after a life-threatening incident. Even with all the weight on his shoulders, the young guy should be able to conquer this formidable foe. If he can do that, then surely nothing can stand in his way.
