The LA Lakers played again on Tuesday night when they went on the road to play the Dallas Mavericks. This came after they won the NBA’s first In-Season Tournament in Las Vegas.
LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and Luka Doncic were all able to play for their teams even though they had iffy tags. Of course, Kyrie Irving and Jarred Vanderbilt were not there. And in the end, it was the Mavericks who won, 127–125. The Lakers’ record dropped to 14–10 for the season.
Both teams made mistakes early in the game and turned the ball over several times. After missing a few layups, Davis finally made one with one second left to tie the game at six.
To end the Mavericks’ quick 5-0 run, Taurean Prince made the first three-point shot of the night for the Lakers. Davis then got his second foul, though, so he had to go to the bench right away.
As expected, the Lakers’ attack had a hard time when both James and Davis were on the bench. Aside from Rui Hachimura’s five straight points, which helped, L.A. was still behind 34–26 at the end of the first quarter.
In the first half, Tim Hardaway Jr. was on fire for the Mavericks. He kept that up in the second quarter with another three-pointer before Austin Reaves answered with his own. From there, the Lakers’ defense started to tighten up, which helped them cut down on their lead while LeBron kept getting the ball to the basket.
After that, though, Dallas scored again because Los Angeles couldn’t stop Doncic from getting free throws. Then Seth Curry made a tough shot from deep, and the Mavericks were up 13 points.
They kept making mistakes that gave the Mavericks easy shots, and they stayed hot from three-point range. At the end of the first half, the Lakers scored six straight points to stay in the game, but they were still behind 71–61 at the break.
At the end of the first half, Davis was limping around with what looked like a groin problem. He was back in the game to start the third quarter, though. James, on the other hand, was making shots for L.A. early in the third quarter. He made a three-pointer and then Davis made a baby hook, cutting the lead to five points. Jason Kidd had to call a timeout.
The Lakers went on another run at the end of the third quarter, which gave them their first lead since the beginning of the game. Davis helped a lot with that. He scored five straight points, including a three-pointer at the last second that put his team ahead 95–93 going into the fourth.
James scored to start the fourth quarter, making it 10-0. Grant Williams and Dante Exum then made three-pointers to end the game.
The game was tied at 108 in the middle of the fourth quarter, and Doncic, Hardaway, James, and Davis were still leading their teams. They were swapping baskets. But after the Lakers turned the ball over twice, Dallas scored five points quickly as Exum kept shooting well from deep.
Doncic was as good as they said he would be, but it was the Mavericks’ other players, like Hardaway, Exum, and Williams, who kept giving the Lakers trouble.
It was the same thing with Prince for Dallas. He hit another three to bring the Lakers back within four points in the last two minutes. But the Lakers again left Exum wide open, and he punished them with another corner three.
From there, the Lakers weren’t able to get back on track, and they lost.
