Jimmy Butler’s Big Face Coffee, which started out as an unauthorized business serving $20 coffee drinks of any size within a hotel bubble at Disney World in Orlando, is currently making waves in the specialty coffee industry.
At yesterday’s El Salvador Cup of Excellence (COE) auction, the five-time NBA all-star’s startup coffee company paid top money for two coffees from microlots of more than ninety.
The semi-washed Pacamara variety coffee produced by Ever Leonel Diaz Perez of the Mileydi farm in El Salvador’s northern Metapán region was up for auction, and Butler’s Big Face Coffee placed the winning bid of $70 per pound of green coffee, according to confirmation from the Salvadoran ministry of agriculture and COE organizer, the Alliance for Coffee Excellence (ACE).
The worldwide judges of the renowned coffee competition announced the final results, and the coffee received an astounding 91.68.
“As we’ve seen with wine, for example, it’s amazing to see a professional athlete take coffee to the next level business,” ACE Managing Director of Marketing and Memberships Anna Abatzoglou emailed DCN. “We want to honor and recognize coffee excellence for growers, and we know Big Face will contribute to the growth of awareness and community for this game-changing coffee.”
A washed Gesha type produced at the Santa Elena farm in the Department of Santa Ana in northwest El Salvador, the third-highest scoring lot had two winning bids of $55.90 and $52.20 from the company, BIGFACE, which was registered in the auction.
The El Salvador Cup of Excellence auction was a great success thanks in part to the Big Face bids, as 24 winning lots of 87+ coffees brought in an average of over $22 per pound. In contrast, as of this writing, the contract price on the commodities market for arabica coffees was $1.83 per pound.
Big Face pledged to buy over 1,000 pounds of coffee in total, demonstrating their dedication to the highest standards of quality in addition to their business goals for the brand.
