LA Lakers lost painfully to New York Knicks on the day of launching the NBA championship banner of the season

After a long road trip, the Los Angeles Lakers hosted the New York Knicks at home on Monday night before going on the road again.

The Lakers celebrated their victory in the In-Season Tournament by raising a banner prior to the game. But when play started, the Knicks won, outlasting the Lakers 114-109.

Donte DiVincenzo and D’Angelo Russell both scored three points to get their teams going in the first quarter. The Knicks were missing their starting centre Mitchell Robinson, so it was only logical for the Lakers to try to get Anthony Davis the ball down low as quickly as possible. Davis was having a field day as a result.

However, the Los Angeles Lakers made a pair of costly errors, and the Knicks took their first lead, 15–14. However, Austin Reaves did exactly what he usually does in the first minute of play, lighting up the bench with a triple and a charge. But Immanuel Quickley, the Knicks’ substitute player, was equally intense. With two three-pointers from him and Reaves to end the first quarter, New York led 35–27 entering the second.

LeBron James was mostly quiet for the Lakers in the first quarter, but he switched into attack gear with a layup to start the second.

Julius Randle took over for the Knicks and they never looked back, pushing their advantage to double digits for the first time. Russell added a triple of his own after Taurean Prince had made two straight.

Following that, Davis went on a scoring binge to end the half, leading the Lakers to a 58-57 lead at the break thanks to a midrange jumper that beat the buzzer.

James scored five points in a row to start the Lakers’ third quarter before passing the ball to Davis for an impeccable alley-oop.

There were frequent changes in the lead throughout the thrilling third quarter as each time one team scored, the other would match it. One instance of that was when Jalen Brunson came down and hit one after Reaves blasted a triple.

The Knicks dominated the Lakers and led 90-80 entering the fourth quarter after finishing the quarter on a 12-2 run.

After Rui Hachimura’s long-range shot to start the last quarter, Reaves found a cutting LeBron to put Los Angeles back within five. However, Darvin Ham called a much-needed timeout after Brunson and the Knicks answered with a swift run to cut their lead back to 10.

But after the timeout, Davis and James captivated the crowd with two enormous dunks to narrow the lead to four points.

However, after a Knicks timeout, Brunson scored inside and Randle nailed a huge three to help the team retake the lead. The Lakers were unable to take advantage of multiple great late-game opportunities, which is why they lost.
