D’Angelo Russell, a guard with the Lakers, has a peculiar pastime: swimming with tigers. You did really read correctly. Russell recently posted a video of himself swimming with two Bengal tigers at a Florida wildlife sanctuary to his Instagram feed. As soon as the video became viral, many people expressed their shock and worry for Russell’s safety as well as the welfare of the animals.
Known for his passion for animals, Russell revealed in an interview with ESPN that he has been going to the refuge for a number of years and has developed a strong relationship with the tigers. Furthermore, he underlined that the tigers are accustomed to being near people because they are well-trained and have grown up in confinement.
Russell’s efforts have drawn criticism from certain animal rights advocates, who contend that it is reckless to encourage people to believe that swimming with wild animals is safe. They make the point that, although being raised in cage, tigers are strong predators and can be unexpected.
Notwithstanding the debate, it’s obvious that Russell loves animals more than merely going for swims with them. In addition, he has contributed to a number of animal welfare projects, such as working with the ASPCA to save dogs from high-kill shelters.
Anyway, a lot of people have been talking about the relationship between humans and wild animals and whether it is ever appropriate to be this close to such powerful creatures since Russell’s film was released. How do you feel? Tell us in the comments section below!
