The Los Angeles Lakers faced the Chicago Bulls on Wednesday night to start a difficult three-game road trip.
Gabe Vincent’s comeback from his knee injury meant that the Lakers were playing at full strength for the first time this season, but it didn’t matter because they still lost 124-108.
Point guard Coby White, who has been playing exceptionally well in Zach LaVine’s absence, opened the scoring early in this game by hitting a midrange jumper, and LeBron James followed with a layup to put the Lakers ahead.
James was hot early on, making the Lakers lead 9–4 and forcing a timeout out of the Bulls with a booming dunk and a three-pointer.
After the timeout, Chicago responded admirably, as White and Alex Caruso each drained three-pointers and two-pointers to start a 10-0 run that was eventually stopped by Anthony Davis.
However, the Lakers remained chilly while the Bulls were scorching, which gave Chicago its first double-digit advantage.
With three minutes remaining in the first quarter, Vincent checked in for the first time and contributed an assist right away. The Lakers, on the other hand, had a difficult second quarter, trailing 33–22 at the halfway point.
In the second quarter, the Bulls showed no signs of slowing down as Javon Carter made back-to-back three-pointers to increase the advantage to fifteen.
With a 13-0 run that featured triples from Cam Reddish and Prince, James finally put some life back into the Lakers, but the team still had a long way to go.
Prince made the Bulls pay once more for continuing to leave him open at the 3-point line, giving the Lakers a much-needed offensive spark.
Before Chicago finished the quarter on a high note and led 61-55 at the half, Los Angeles narrowed its deficit to two points.
In the third quarter, Davis and James led the Lakers with consecutive and-one baskets. But when Davis hurt his ankle and had to leave the game, the momentum came to a grinding halt, allowing the Bulls to reclaim their lead.
Rui Hachimura hit a huge three-pointer at the buzzer to hold the Lakers within twelve points at 90-78 heading into the fourth quarter, despite some careless turnovers on their part.
Even though he appeared to be limited by the ankle problem, Davis was able to make a comeback at the beginning of the fourth quarter. Although James and Reaves were contributing offensively to prevent the game from getting out of hand, the Bulls were still making a lot of free throws from outside the area.
As has often been the case in the past, DeRozan destroyed his home club with a variety of midrange jumpers, while the supporting cast of the Bulls also made significant deep contributions.
The Lakers made an attempt to rally, but they were unable to generate enough stops to make a dent in the lead and ultimately lost another heartbreaking game.
