The Boston Celtics have been great at almost every part of the game this season. The third quarter is one of them.
Boston was eighth in the NBA in third-quarter net rating going into their game in San Antonio on Sunday night. It’s safe to say that after beating the Spurs so badly, they’ll be going up those ranks.
They scored 40 points against San Antonio, which was their second-highest third quarter of the season. We mean that: it was an attack from the beginning of the frame to the very end.
With back-to-back baskets for the C’s in the first minute, Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum worked together. Brown made him when he got an offensive grab and then made a smooth fadeaway from the free-throw line right after. Tatum then made a 3-pointer from the left side that put the Celtics 17 points ahead.
From there, Boston didn’t slow down. During the quarter, it made 53.3% of its shots from the field. This time it was Payton Pritchard who played a beautiful fadeaway just before the buzzer. After a Spurs make, he quickly took the ball in motion and drilled a fadeaway over Cedi Osman’s raised hand with 0.2 seconds left on the clock. Everyone on the team jumped up and down to celebrate when Pritchard made the shot from the left sideline, right in front of Boston’s bench.
The C’s must have known at that point that they were almost certain to win.
During the quarter, Boston pulled ahead by as many as 30 points, while San Antonio could only score 23 points on 40.9 percent shooting from the other end of the court. The Celtics led 105–76 going into the fourth quarter and went on to win 134–101.
Derrick White, a key player, keeps getting hotter.
The seventh-year guard, who should be picked for his first All-Star game this season, scored more than his season average on Sunday night, even though he only played more than 25 minutes. White ended the game with 17 points after only 11 shots. He made seven of those shots go in, and he made three of six shots from long range to score.
White may have made the biggest dunk of his career with one of those shots. There was 5:46 left in the third quarter when White slammed a three-pointer without being challenged. Jaylen Brown had just picked off a Spurs outlet pass and tipped the ball to White. White, who is usually very polite, took an extra moment to celebrate by looking at Boston’s bench. He then gave Brown a high five and ran to the other end of the court to play defense.
