On Thursday night, the Milwaukee Bucks defeated the San Antonio Spurs 125-121, thanks to a strong performance by 20-year-old Victor Wembanyama and 44 points and 14 rebounds from Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Devin Vassell led the Spurs with 34 points, while Wembanyama finished with 27.
Due to Antetokounmpo’s damaged ankle on December 19 in Milwaukee, Wembanyama’s first meeting with the rookie French player was postponed, but the wait was well worth it.

With three minutes left, Antetokounmpo made a 3-pointer to tie the score at 118, drawing a charge on Wembanyama. Thirty-four seconds later, the Greek star made his second 3-pointer of the game to give the Bucks a 121-118 lead.
With 53 seconds remaining, Wembanyama tied the game by blocking Damian Lillard’s layup and scoring a three-pointer.
Antetokounmpo tried a dunk, but Wembanyama stopped it to create a chance for a game-tying basket. Tre Jones received the ball after Wembanyama passed up a disputed 3-point attempt, but the guard missed a shot from the right corner.
Lillard finished with 10 assists in addition to 25 points.
Playing against Antetokounmpo, to whom the 7-foot-3 rookie from France is sometimes likened, energized Wembanyama. Wembanyama claimed that because Antetokounmpo is a 7-foot Greek athlete who is aggressive and “scary for his opponents,” he is one of the players he has studied the most.
Wembanyama gave the Bucks a dose of his own fear.
Wembanyama was 10 of 18 from the field, grabbed nine rebounds, blocked five, and changed multiple shots.
Early in the second quarter, Wembanyama threw the ball off the backboard to himself for a two-handed slam that electrified the crowd. A few minutes later, after forcing Antetokounmpo to give up the ball close to the rim, he recovered defensively to block Portis’ short jumper.
Wembanyama grabbed a loose ball in the first minute of the third quarter, drove to the hoop, passed the ball around his back to evade Lillard, and dunked the ball over Brook Lopez with one hand.
His colleagues benefited from his positive spirit, as they played their most polished game this season despite a disappointing campaign.
In the first few minutes, San Antonio seemed destined for yet another crushing defeat.
After trailing the Bucks by 13 points at the beginning of the game, the Spurs outscored them 34-29 in the third quarter to tie the game at 93-93 heading into the fourth. This season, San Antonio won in the third quarter for the third time. The Spurs entered the game with the worst scoring differential in the league, a -6.8 third-quarter deficit.
Milwaukee scored 11 points in a row in the first four minutes, with Middleton scoring seven of them. With five 3-pointers, the Bucks ended the first quarter 5 for 9.
